About & Methodology

DIY Material Math is a free collection of material calculators for home and yard projects in the United States. The goal is simple: tell you how much to buy before you go to the store, and show the math so you can check it.

Why this site exists

Most project mistakes start with a bad estimate. Buy too little concrete and you end up with a weak cold joint mid-pour. Buy too much mulch and you're stuck with a pile in the driveway. Many calculators online give you a number without telling you what it assumes. We try to do the opposite: every calculator explains its formula, the product sizes it's based on and the waste allowance it adds.

How we calculate

Limits of any calculator

Our results are estimates for planning and budgeting. Real-world quantities depend on how accurately you measure, site conditions and the specific product you buy. For structural work such as footings, decks, retaining walls and roofs, follow your local building code and the manufacturer's installation instructions, and consult a licensed professional when in doubt.

Corrections

If you find an error, a product size that has changed or a calculator that doesn't cover your situation, please let us know. We review every report and update pages when we confirm a problem. Each page shows the date it was last updated.

How the site is funded
